7 Μαΐ 2020 · With a capacity of 1,972 passengers and 1,345 crew, a tonnage of 79,280 GRT (83,423 GRT after reconstruction in 1938) and a length of 313.58 meters, the Normandie was also the largest and longest ship at the time. In fact, she was the first liner with a length of more than 300 meters and the first liner with a tonnage above 60,000 GRT.

Intended to be the pride of the French people, she was designed to be the height of shipbuilding technology and modern culture.
Because of her flat bottom, which gave the ship a draft of only 1½ feet forward when empty and 4 to 7 feet when fully loaded, she could steam right up onto a beach despite her great size and discharge her cargo through massive bow doors.
The Allied code names for the beaches along the 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast targeted for landing were Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Omaha was the costliest beach in terms of Allied casualties. 5,000 ships and landing craft 50,000 vehicles 11,000 planes.
3 Ιουν 2024 · The Allied fleet of 7,000 vessels of all kinds departed from English south-coast ports in an operation code-named Neptune. The ships gathered off Portsmouth in a zone called 'Piccadilly Circus ' after the busy London road junction, and then made their way to Normandy.
