English Architecture in the Northern Renaissance. The Tudor architectural style was the final development of medieval architecture during the Tudor period (1485–1603).
The Northern Renaissance has its roots in the Gothic tradition and the lavish court art sponsored by the dukes of Burgundy, who controlled regions of present-day France and the Low Countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg).
Local architects developed a specifically Spanish Renaissance, bringing the influence of South Italian architecture, sometimes from illuminated books and paintings, mixed with Gothic tradition and local traditions.
The detailed realism of Early Netherlandish painting, led by Robert Campin and Jan van Eyck in the 1420s and 1430s, is today generally considered to be the beginning of the early Northern Renaissance in painting.
Characteristics & Style of the Northern Renaissance. The Northern Renaissance artists were masters of observation and technique. While their Italian counterparts were more concerned with linear perspective and classical ideals of form and proportion, these painters excelled at empirical perspective and minute realistic detail.
By the end of the fifteenth century, a remarkable number of Italian cities north of the Apennines were firmly established as great artistic centers. These included cities with dazzling courts, such as Milan, Bologna, Ferrara, and Mantua, and, of course, the Republic of Venice.
