In December 2021, there were 9,243,999 people receiving Social Security disability benefits as disabled workers, disabled widow (er)s, or disabled adult children. The following table presents unedited data (including corrections, if any) on disabled worker beneficiaries paid from Social Security's Disability Insurance Trust Fund.
Includes children receiving SSI based on their own disability. Social Security beneficiaries who are neither aged nor disabled (for example, early retirees, young survivors).
Some 7.3 million people received disabled-worker benefits from Social Security in April 2024. Payments also went to some of their family members: 86,000 spouses and 1.1 million children under the age of 18.
