Administered by the Office of Health Services, medical and health services are provided to individuals in custody in all IDOC correctional centers. Notable features common to all facilities include: Each facility has a pharmacy and distributes medication to individuals in custody as prescribed. Three facilities offer on-site dialysis.
8 Ιαν 2024 · The monitor found that prison medical units are understaffed, patient intake screenings do not fully address patients’ medical problems or create a care plan, and the department does not review deaths in custody to identify opportunities for medical care improvement, among dozens of other issues.
Clinicians should understand the rights of patients who are incarcerated in the health care setting, characteristics of this hospitalized population, and the practical challenges in managing the comfort, privacy, surrogacy, and transitions of care for these individuals.

Policies and procedures provide guidance, standardization and consistency in practices, and failure to comply places the nurse, the patient, and the facility at risk. Policies, procedures, and nursing protocols should be congruent with the state Nurse Practice Act to assure that correctional nursing care is always within the scope of practice.
Beginning on January 1, 2022, the Medical Release Act, also known as the Joe Coleman Act, will be enacted to allow individuals in custody that are suffering from a terminal illness or medical incapacitation, to file a medical release application.
