This case raises fundamental questions concerning not only economic and racial justice, but also the role of African American women in redressing the socio-economic conditions that oppressed women and families.
In 1940, Murray was hired by the Workers’ Defense League in their campaign to pardon Odell Waller, a Black sharecropper convicted of murdering his white landlord. Murray traveled around the country to raise money for legal fees and advocate for Waller and other Black, Southern sharecroppers.

10 Απρ 2017 · Waller had been sentenced to death for shooting the white man whose land he farmed: in self-defense, he claimed; in cold blood, according to the all-white jury that convicted him.
A few months later, Murray was called upon by the Workers Defense League to raise funds for Odell Waller, a Virginia sharecropper who had been sentenced to death for killing his landlord in what he claimed was self-defense. The case was a turning point in Murray’s career.
