A collection of more than 1,000 photos, numerous artifacts and rotating exhibits tells the story of the small town that began with one man’s ingenuity. He convinced the railroad to come through the community of 5 Roads with the promise of a right-away.
This free, award-winning exhibit commemorated the centennial of US entry into World War I and focused on North Carolina’s role in the War to End All Wars on the western front in France and Belgium. Visitors experienced a re-created trench warfare environment to discover what life was like for Tar Heel soldiers, who entered the war in 1917.
Permanent Exhibits include . . . Oakboro’s original Western Union telegraph key, jacks used for track maintenance, and other memorabilia from early days. A restored Norfolk Southern caboose is permanently situated on tracks on the museum site.

Visitors to the museum can see exhibits in ten thematic sections that are each devoted to a specific topic. One highlight of the museum is an exhibit that includes items recovered during a recent archaeological dig of the Lebetter Site.
