Union forces were able to fire upon Occoquan from an elevated camp across the river on the Fairfax side and succeeded in destroying the Janney’s cotton mill.

Occoquan, which grew around a mill constructed in 1755, was the site of an important river crossing for troops during the Civil War, as the principal road between Alexandria and Fredericksburg passed through the town. From this point a pontoon bridge stretched across the Occoquan River in June 1863.
Despite having one of the lowest battle casualty rates of the Confederacy, the death rate was “horrendous” in no small part because the majority of soldiers were Union prisoners-of-war at Camp Douglas (Weaver 1992).

It was four stories high. Both wool and cotton were processed on the 1000 spindles. It was destroyed during the Civil War by the Union Army.
