Occoquan’s Civil War Years - A foundation of Quaker mill owners gives the town a reputation as an abolitionist stronghold. Residents John Underwood and Samuel M. Janney are arrested for their antislavery views.
During the Civil War, the post office passed letters and packages between North and South. River silting reduced ship traffic to Occoquan and ended its days as a port, as did the shift in traffic to railroads.
During the Civil War, Alexandria and Washington were blockaded and Occoquan was one of the last post offices in which mail could be sent between the north and south. 1809 A stage coach fine was established by Nathaniel Ellicott of Occoquan to travel between Alexandria and Dumfries.
Occoquan, which grew around a mill constructed in 1755, was the site of an important river crossing for troops during the Civil War, as the principal road between Alexandria and Fredericksburg passed through the town. From this point a pontoon bridge stretched across the Occoquan River in June 1863.
Commonwealth of Virginia voted overwhelmingly to ratify succession from the Union on May 23, 1861, officially making the commonwealth and Prince William County a part of the Confederacy. USS Stepping Stones was a steamer purchased by the Union Navy during the early part of the American Civil War. She was used by the Union Navy first as a dispatch boat, and also as a gunboat assigned to patrol Confederate waterways.
