Occoquan, which grew around a mill constructed in 1755, was the site of an important river crossing for troops during the Civil War, as the principal road between Alexandria and Fredericksburg passed through the town. USS Stepping Stones was a steamer purchased by the Union Navy during the early part of the American Civil War. She was used by the Union Navy first as a dispatch boat, and also as a gunboat assigned to patrol Confederate waterways.
28 Ιουν 2014 · During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate forces considered Wolf Run Shoals an essential crossing point on the Occoquan River through 1963. Confederate regiments camped on the south side of the shoals and posted pickets there from the winter of 1861–1862 until March 1862.
