There are 8 general taxonomic groupings, starting with the most general and ending at the most specific. The groupings are: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum (or Division for plants), Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Based on habitat and mobility, there are three main groups of marine animals: plankton, nekton, and benthos. Based on the five-kingdom classification, there are numerous bacteria, protozoans, planktons, a very few fungi, plants, and diverse groups of animals.
