Ogham (/ ˈ ɒ ɡ əm / OG-əm, [4] Modern Irish: [ˈoː(ə)mˠ]; Middle Irish: ogum, ogom, later ogam [ˈɔɣəmˠ] [5] [6]) is an Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write the early Irish language (in the "orthodox" inscriptions, 4th to 6th centuries AD), and later the Old Irish language (scholastic ogham, 6th to 9th centuries).
The Tree Alphabet acts as the primer for learning about the Ogham characters, their meanings, and their tree associations. Trees were of great importance to the Celts of ancient Ireland, and not only provided shelter and sustenance but were sources of magic and power.
Ogham is an alphabet that appears on monumental inscriptions dating from the 4th to the 6th century AD, and in manuscripts dating from the 6th to the 9th century. It was used mainly to write Primitive and Old Irish, and also to write Old Welsh, Pictish and Latin.
