Permits issued by the Service's Ecological Services Program are of three basic types: Incidental take permits may be sought when a non-federal entity believes their otherwise lawful activities may result in take of endangered or threatened animal species.

A permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) may be required in addition to the state permit for collection of migratory birds or protected species. Persons wishing to obtain a Scientific Collecting Permit must complete the application in its entirety (Form 8954).
