SERS is required to withhold federal income tax from your monthly pension amount unless you elect in writing not to have any withholding. You need to complete and file an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form W-4P with SERS to instruct the retirement system on whether income tax should be withheld.

Ohio residents can receive both SERS benefits and Social Security benefits if they qualify for both. That answer sounds confusing, but being dual eligible means you contributed to both the state-based program and the federal one.
There are three Ohio public retirement systems that are connected for the purposes of combining service credit: School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS); the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS); and the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).
Social Security. By working in a position that is not covered by Social Security, the pension you receive (if eligible) may reduce any Social Security benefits you may also be eligible to receive.
Board of education members can contribute to either the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS) or to Social Security for compensation paid for service as a school board member. Community School Board membership questions should be directed to SERS.
