Gears, cogs, and sprockets are all mechanical components used for transmitting rotational motion and torque between two shafts or other elements.
Ancient gears at the Ctesiphon archeological site in Iraq. Here in Japan, as seen from the picture below, gears were in use in the Edo period (1603~1867) as a power source for flour milling in waterwheels. The gear was as large as one meter in diameter, and zelkova and oak trees were used as the material.
The large cog wheel turns a smaller cog wheel at much greater speed with good old fashioned muscle power! The force is transmitted from one cog wheel to another. Since a larger cog wheel of more teeth drives a smaller cog wheel of less teeth, the output is a high turning speed of the drill.
2 Νοε 2011 · #1. Good morning machinists and engineering experts. I am looking for the old wooden patterns or molds of gears and cogs to fill the museum's collection and to find out the designs of the toothed wheels that were made back in the days.
The illustration given below identifies the components of a spur gear pinion and cog. A gear or cogwheel is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh with another toothed part in order to transmit torque, in most cases with teeth on the one gear being of identical shape, and often also with that shape on the other gear.
