Fanned by the Santa Ana winds, the Old Fire burned 91,281 acres (369.40 km 2), destroyed 993 homes, and caused six deaths. The fire threatened San Bernardino and Highland, as well as the mountain resort communities of Cedar Glen, Crestline, Running Springs and Lake Arrowhead and forcing upwards of 80,000 residents to evacuate their homes.

Animation of the Old Fire/Grand Prix fire in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles, from data acquired October 26, 2003 by ASTER. It was created by combining ASTER visible, near-infrared and shortwave infrared imagery with Landsat Thematic Mapper data and US Geological Survey digital topographic data.
According to the USDA Forest Service, the Old Fire, combined with the nearby Grand Prix Fire, burned more than 91,000 acres and 993 homes. While sorting through some old FeederWatch photos, we discovered a photo that Herman Paulk sent us back in 1995 showing his proximity to the San Bernardino Mountains.

The trail passes over the San Bernardino Mountain Range, rising from Silverwood Lake and passing over Sugarpine Mountain at altitudes that are the domain of the big pine forests. The impressive tall pines are survivors of the 2003 Old Fire, which burned 91,000 acres and the scared victims are still visible.
