8 Μαΐ 2017 · A chance to tour the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison is drawing big crowds, encouraging local residents who want to preserve the historic structure, parts of which date to 1839.
The State of Iowa's Department of Corrections has moved to a new state-of-the-art facility just 1.5 miles away from the original location. This leaves the historic Iowa State Penitentiary standing empty for the first time in over 175 years.
The old state prison, which is located about two miles south of the new one, did not exactly get off to a sterling start in 1839. The state’s first prison “started out as a hole in the ground under the floor of the warden’s mansion. Seven of the first eleven prisoners escaped,” according to an Iowa State Penitentiary publication.
The Iowa State Penitentiary (ISP) is an Iowa Department of Corrections maximum security prison for men located in the Lee County, Iowa, community of Fort Madison. This facility should not be confused with the Historical Iowa State Penitentiary, which was shut down in 2015 [1] after being open for 175 years. [2]
