Reformulated OxyContin became commercially available on August 9, 2010, and, in consultation with FDA, shipments of the original formulation ceased that same month. There was no notification to the general public or prescribers, and no modification in price.
Allowing every 8-hour dosing for these patients may achieve less oxycodone exposure with the same therapeutic benefit, decrease the need for multiple prescriptions (which may improve compliance and minimize diversion risk), decrease costs, and, most importantly, is just plain common sense.
The FDA's decision not to approve generic versions of original-formula OxyContin may keep drug costs high for patients with pain, but the benefits of the newer, abuse-resistant formulation outweigh this harm.
