Throughout its fascinating history, this little hamlet — which wasn't really that little when it was in its prime — saw cowboys, Indian battles, French traders, Spanish dragoons, card sharps, boot makers, and wildcatter's traverse its streets.
27 Ιαν 2021 · Spanish Fort is located in north central Montague County at the end of Farm Road 103 one mile south of the Red River. Spanish Fort began in the eighteenth century as a fortified Taovaya Indian settlement, misnamed later by Anglo settlers who found Spanish artifacts and ruins of a fort near the site.
In the late 1750s, the Spanish sent an army of five hundred to punish the Comanche, Wichita and their French allies at what is now called the Old Spanish Fort. They intended to teach the Indians not to raid the settlements around San Antonio but their overwhelming defeat encouraged future attacks.
