Type 2 may be controlled, at least initially, with weight loss, diet and oral hypoglycemic agents. Generally, diabetes is a disorder of the older, often overweight cat, similar to Type 2 diabetes in humans. Risk factors include body weight > 7 kg, older age (> 10 years), male gender, neutered.
Causes of feline diabetes. Feline diabetes can affect cats of any age, sex, or breed. The disorder is more common in overweight male cats over six years old. The causes are unknown although poor nutrition as a kitten, genetics, obesity, hormonal imbalances and certain medications can all be factors.
Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed by the presence of the typical clinical signs (excess thirst, excess urination, excess appetite, and weight loss), a persistently high level of glucose in the blood, and the presence of glucose in the urine.
