The cat dates from the Late Period of ancient Egypt around 600 BC. It's named after Major Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson, who donated the statue to the British Museum in 1939. Gayer-Anderson was a keen collector of small Egyptian sculptures, jewellery and pottery.
In 1830, Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg accounted of having observed three different small cat forms in Egypt: the jungle cat, the African wildcat, and a sacred cat that was intermediate in size between the jungle cat and the domestic cat.
7 Δεκ 2021 · Ta-Miu (whose name means “The female cat”) is depicted like any other respectable deceased nobleman, with a sacrificial table in front of her, filled with meat and other sacrifices (!). Thutmose did all he could to assure that Ta-Miu would have a dignified afterlife.

Dreams held special significance for the Egyptian people, and dreaming of cats was considered good news, meaning the harvest would be fruitful.
2 Αυγ 2021 · Nedjem was found in the tomb of a noble man named Puimre, and unlike dogs, it was uncommon to name cats in ancient Egypt. Domestication of cats started in the Near East around 7500 B.C.
Bastet is probably the best-known feline goddess from Egypt. Initially depicted as a lioness, Bastet assumed the image of a cat or a feline-headed woman in the 2nd millennium BCE. Although she combined both nurturing and violent qualities, her shielding and motherly aspects typically were emphasized.
