History. Mafdet was the first known cat-headed deity in ancient Egypt. During the First Dynasty, she was regarded as protector of the pharaoh's chambers against snakes, scorpions and evil. [ 9 ] . She was often also depicted with a head of a leopard (Panthera pardus) or a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). [ 10 ] .
The cat dates from the Late Period of ancient Egypt around 600 BC. It's named after Major Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson, who donated the statue to the British Museum in 1939. Gayer-Anderson was a keen collector of small Egyptian sculptures, jewellery and pottery.
