The Gayer-Anderson cat is the most famous object of Robert Gayer-Anderson's collection of oriental art. He kept a copy for his museum in Cairo, but donated the original to the British Museum, which you can see in the Egyptian sculpture gallery in Room 4.
History. Mafdet was the first known cat-headed deity in ancient Egypt. During the First Dynasty, she was regarded as protector of the pharaoh's chambers against snakes, scorpions and evil. [ 9 ] . She was often also depicted with a head of a leopard (Panthera pardus) or a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). [ 10 ] .
The sculpture of Bastet is known as the Gayer-Anderson cat after Major Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson who donated it to the British Museum.

The cat's association with ancient Egypt, however, is understandable in that Egyptian culture was famous for its devotion to the cat. The export of cats from Egypt was so strictly prohibited that a branch of the government was formed solely to deal with this issue.
