The ancient European cemetery known as Gross Fredenwalde is currently believed to be the oldest cemetery in the world. According to researchers, it is the earliest known instance of a “true cemetery”, in which people purposely and carefully buried the dead together.
The Varna Necropolis (Bulgarian: Варненски некропол), or Varna Cemetery, is a burial site in the western industrial zone of Varna (approximately half a kilometre from Lake Varna and 4 km from the city centre), internationally considered one of the key archaeological sites in world prehistory.
Various burial sites have been excavated in caves in these regions, all dating to the Middle Paleolithic, some as old as 120,000 years ago. These sites in Skhul, Tabun, Amud, Qafzeh, and Kebara represent the oldest known graves.
