Basketball at the Summer Olympics has been a sport for men consistently since 1936. Prior to its inclusion as a medal sport, basketball was held as an unofficial demonstration event in 1904 and 1924. Women's basketball made its debut in the Summer Olympics in 1976.
The basketball event at Paris 2024, taking place between the 27 July and 11 August, will see 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams compete for Olympic gold. Preliminary matches will take place at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille with the final phase set be staged at the Bercy Arena in Paris.

It was included as a demonstration sport at the Games in 1904 in St Louis. Women’s basketball was included on the Olympic programme for the first time in 1976 in Montreal.
