25 Μαρ 2020 · New Evaluation Systems Provide Illinois Educators Greater Support. In 2010, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA), which changed how teachers’ and principals’ performance is measured in the state.
Illinois offers multiple pathways to licensure for traditional candidates enrolled in colleges and universities, career changers, and industry professionals. These pathways allow teacher candidates to utilize degrees, formal programs, coursework, and work experience to become teachers.
A guidance document that addresses how to enhance student learning outcomes and the professional development of teachers in ways that are fair and effective for all stakeholders. This document includes example policy language and ideas for streamlining the evaluation process.

Teacher certification programs in Illinois are offered through regionally accredited and board-approved degree-granting colleges. Out-of-state colleges offering educator preparation programs must be approved by their state's educational authority and their program must lead to licensure.

Content Test Timing: Candidates in traditional or apprenticeship programs must pass the content test before receiving a Professional Educator License, not before student teaching.
