The PSA blood test can be used to screen for prostate cancer in men without symptoms. It’s also one of the first tests done in men who have symptoms that might be caused by prostate cancer. PSA in the blood is measured in units called nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL).
The prostate health index (PHI) is one such test that is a more accurate blood test and measures your risk for having prostate cancer. It’s approved by the FDA for men who have PSA scores between 4 and 10. What are the benefits of the PHI test?
20 Απρ 2023 · The primary screening test was serum PSA. Men with PSA ≥3.0 ng/mL were referred for a systematic prostate biopsy (in Finland, men with PSA 3.0–3.9 ng/mL had an ancillary test to select for biopsy). The screening interval was 4 years in most centres.
A prostate biopsy is one of the most accurate ways to diagnose prostate cancer. But because it is an invasive procedure, other screening methods are used first. Some tests may be carried out by your GP when you first go to them with concerns. Others are carried out at a hospital.
The screening tests discussed here can be used to look for possible signs of prostate cancer. But these tests can’t tell for sure if you have cancer. If the result of one of these tests is abnormal, you will probably need a prostate biopsy (discussed below) to know for sure if you have cancer.
