The Palais Garnier (French: [palɛ ɡaʁnje] ⓘ, Garnier Palace), also known as L'Opéra Garnier (French: [ɔpeʁa ɡaʁnje] ⓘ, Garnier Opera), is a historic 1,979-seat [3] opera house at the Place de l'Opéra in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, France.

The Palais Garnier in Paris is most commonly known as the Paris Opera, and is one of the most important buildings in Paris. It is centrally placed just a short distance from the Louvre. This 2,200 seat opera house was the successor to the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique, which had burned down in 1873.
Currently called the Opéra national de Paris, it mainly produces operas at its modern 2,723-seat theatre Opéra Bastille which opened in 1989, and ballets and some classical operas at the older 1,979-seat Palais Garnier which opened in 1875. Small scale and contemporary works are also staged in the 500-seat Amphitheatre under the Opéra Bastille.
The Paris Opera Orchestra consists of excellent French players, known especially for their rebellious temperament. In 1990, Palais Garnier and the Opéra Bastille formed the Paris Opera, which in 1994 became the Opéra National de Paris.
