Operational psychology involves the application of the science of behavior to national security, law enforcement, and military operations. This chapter explores foundational descriptions of operational psychology, discusses its links to other areas of psychology, and addresses its scope of practice.
This chapter intends to tie together the various topics and issues that were addressed across the book, projecting their natural trajectory into future operational psychology applications. Psychology has a valuable role to play in all areas of human endeavor.
This work has the potential to elevate the visibility and brand of I-O psychology, as organizational leaders continue to be challenged with disruption, complexity, and unprecedented change that requires evidence-based insights to enable organizational success and in some cases survival.
Operational psychology is an evolving psychology specialty that provides a conceptual framework for the varied roles and responsibilities of military and government psychologists, in support of national security, public safety, and corrections.
To facilitate this shift, we define technology, present our paradigmatic framework, explain the framework's importance, and provide recommendations across five key domains: personnel selection, training and development, performance management and motivation, groups and teams, and leadership.
