THE DEFINITION OF ECONOMIC SOCIOLOGY. Economic sociology—to use a term that Weber and Durkheim introduced2—can be defined simply as the sociological perspective applied to economic phenomena.
The attempt is made to show that operational definitions hamper scientific advance by their inadequacy in dealing with new situations, with situations not measurable as yet, with improvements of measurement, and with choice among various available measurements.
The typical steps in the conceptualization-operationalization-measurement process in quantitative research involve developing a research question, defining the key concepts related to that question, and deciding on operational definitions of those concepts—that is, how exactly to measure them in the real world.
In lieu of further discussion of these four criteria for defining sociological concepts, we proceed to demonstrate that they can be applied by exact and controlled experiments.
