Cards Regions are useful for presenting a variety of information in small blocks and can be heavily customized. They can be displayed in three styles, with icons or initials, images as part of the body or as the background, to enhance each card presentation and you can control the layout.

This flagship feature of APEX allows you to effortlessly customize every aspect of a Cards region's UI (layout, appearance, icon, badge, and media). Cards regions can contain advanced HTML expressions that support client-side templating, and the ability to define multiple actions per card.
8.5 Managing Cards. A cards page features an orderly layout of information tiles. Developers choose between three layouts: Grid, Float, or Horizontal (Row). A cards report region declaratively supports customizations of layout and appearance and the inclusion of icons, badges, media, and actions.
