4 Σεπ 2008 · In short: SID = the unique name of your DB, ServiceName = the alias used when connecting. Not strictly true. SID = unique name of the INSTANCE (eg the oracle process running on the machine). Oracle considers the "Database" to be the files. Service Name = alias to an INSTANCE (or many instances).
26 Δεκ 2023 · SIDs and service names are both used to identify a database instance, but they serve different purposes. SIDs are used for internal purposes within the Oracle database, while service names are used for external purposes, such as connecting to the database from an application.
The SERVICE_NAME can be any valid service presented by the listener. You can check the available services by issuing the lsnrctl status or lsnrctl service commands on the database server. Typically there is at least one service matching the ORACLE_SID of the instance, but you can create more.
17 Φεβ 2009 · 1) What is the difference between SID entry and SERVICE_NAME in the tnsnames.ora. 2) When I put SID the connection is successful, when I put SERVICE_NAME it says tns could not resolve service name. 20 Σεπ 2004 · sid+oracle_home+hostname = a database instance. use this and you get connected to specific instance service=collection of equivalent instances. used most often in a clustering environment but has applicability in single instance database configurations as well.
28 Μαρ 2017 · I have this idea that service names / aliases given to connections descriptors in a tnsnames.ora (not the one in the server that dblinks use, but the one for the public) file should in no way be related to the SID and much less the name of the server.
6 Μαΐ 2020 · Oracle SID is the unique name that uniquely identifies your instance/database where as Service name is the TNS alias. SERVICE_NAME is the new feature from oracle 8i on wards in which database can register itself with listener.
