4 Σεπ 2008 · In short: SID = the unique name of your DB, ServiceName = the alias used when connecting. Not strictly true. SID = unique name of the INSTANCE (eg the oracle process running on the machine). Oracle considers the "Database" to be the files. Service Name = alias to an INSTANCE (or many instances).
26 Δεκ 2023 · SIDs and service names are both used to identify a database instance, but they serve different purposes. SIDs are used for internal purposes within the Oracle database, while service names are used for external purposes, such as connecting to the database from an application.
For additional help using the connection dialog, visit the connection dialog help. Copy the TNSNAMES.ORA file that you want to use into the directory that is set as Config Files Folder in the Oracle Developer Tools for VS Code Extension Settings, or change this setting as desired.
In the Connection Type dropdown, select Basic (Host, Port, Service Name). Enter the database hostname or IP Address, port number, and service name. Select the database role from the Role drop down list.

28 Μαρ 2017 · I have this idea that service names / aliases given to connections descriptors in a tnsnames.ora (not the one in the server that dblinks use, but the one for the public) file should in no way be related to the SID and much less the name of the server.
