It only gained popularity as a house pet in the 1800s and was recognized as a breed in 1885 by the American Kennel Club (AKC). On the other hand, the Golden Retriever originated in Scotland in the 1800s.
28 Φεβ 2024 · Originating in the Scottish Highlands during the late 19th century, the breed was developed by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks, later known as Lord Tweedmouth. He aimed to create a dog that was both an adept retriever in the hunting field and a loyal companion at home.
There are huge differences of opinion as to when dachshunds were specifically bred for their purpose of hunting badger, as the American Kennel Club states the dachshund was bred in the 15th century, while the Dachshund Club of America states that foresters bred the dogs in the 18th or 19th century.
It was said that all Golden Retrievers were direct descendants of this out-cross breeding. This colorful story was accepted as the origin of the Golden Retriever breed until the early 1950’s when Lord Tweedmouth’s original studbooks were made available by a descendant of his.
