The Golden Retriever was bred by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks at his Scottish estate Guisachan in the late nineteenth century. He cross-bred Flat-coated Retrievers with Tweed Water Spaniels, with some further infusions of Red Setter, Labrador Retriever and Bloodhound.
For many years it was generally accepted by authorities that our Goldens were the direct descendants of some Russian circus dogs purchased by a member of the English gentry, Sir Dudley Marjoribanks, later the first Lord Tweedmouth.
Though the breed is famous for its use in exterminating badgers and badger-baiting, dachshunds were also commonly used for rabbit and fox hunting, for locating wounded deer, and in packs were known to hunt game as large as wild boar and as fierce as the wolverine.
A Brief History of the Golden Retriever. The history of our lovely breed dates back over 150 years to a place called Guisachan in Scotland which was the estate of Lord Tweedmouth. In 1952, his great-nephew, the sixth Earl of Ilchester, found Lord Tweedmouth’s meticulously recorded Stud Book and only then was revealed the true origin of the breed.
