Introduction. Dance in African societies is a holistic art form that serves as a pivot around which collective community life revolves. Dance with its music as an art form has significantly become involved in the process of self-reflection and identity construction in Africa.
What is 'African dance'? Is the label 'African dance' representative enough of the diverse dance traditions in African communities, or is it just another form of tokenism? How is the term 'African dance' rooted in the histories of colonial racism against the African people?

The qipao, also called cheongsam or changshan, is recognised as a formal dress and an icon of ethnicity, as well as an identity symbol for Chinese women all over the world (Ling, 2009).
