Invasion of Poland, attack on Poland by Nazi Germany that marked the start of World War II. The invasion lasted from September 1 to October 5, 1939. As dawn broke on September 1, 1939, German forces launched a surprise attack on Poland.
The invasion is also known in Poland as the September campaign (Polish: kampania wrześniowa) or 1939 defensive war (Polish: wojna obronna 1939 roku) and known in Germany as the Poland campaign (German: Überfall auf Polen, Polenfeldzug).

On September 8, German tanks encircled the Polish capital, and the attack began in the south. The Poles pushed the Panzers back. The Germans returned on the 9th, but the Poles threw Molotov cocktails and set fuel on fire on the roads, destroying dozens of tanks causing the Germans to retreat again.
