Orthodox Christianity and Gender The Orthodox Christian tradition has all too often been sidelined in conversations around contemporary religion. Despite being distinct from Protestantism and Ca-tholicism in both theology and practice, it remains an underused setting for aca-demic inquiry into current lived religious practice.
This book describes and analyzes lived expressions of and negotiations with the Orthodox tradition in several such contexts in Europe and the United States in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It covers a wide array of gender-related phenomena and issues: theological, social, political, ethical, and practical.
An ideology and an identity are conceptually distinct. Generally, an ideology refers to a belief system, and an identity refers to meanings an individual and others apply to the self in a social role (Stryker 1980). Despite these distinctions, however, researchers sometimes frame gender ideology (and related constructs) as a marital identity.
