Without high alchemy, many mechanics in this game would be flawed. Those comparing to the general store and low alch are wrong. You can't profit off of low alch, and neither (often) off of the general store. Not to mention, high alching acts like Keynesian aggregate demand stimulus to keep the price level less volatile.
