I made an Outward build calculator that I hope you find helpful when planning out your builds. I recommend using the Outward wiki when searching for items, factions, and skills to use.
I'll list my opinions on which trees are playstyle defining and thus cant be ranked. Then the supplemental trees that can be ranked somewhat. Defining: Warrior Monk for most melees, Rogue for Dagger build, Rune mage for.. rune mage, and Wild hunter for archer.

Characters are able to learn new skills in a variety of ways: Teachers (usually denoted by the icon on a city's map) offer a number of both active and passive skills, and are where breakthrough points are spent. Trainers usually offer one skill for 50 .
Easily craftable Discipline potions/warrior elixirs in addition to Focus and Brace grant me the ability to repeatedly inflict pain (Perfect Strike), and my mace inflicts confusion after 3 hits. Opportunist stab hits 3x for confusion and 3x for pain, so 6x.

I've beat each quest line on multiple characters, and just wanted to offer a few ideas for those having trouble. Firstly, I can say that without a doubt, the Master trader garb, or Entomber armor is by far the best sets in the game.
