It was one of the first Bibles published with annotations in the margins and footnotes. The Scofield Reference Bible was used to promote dispensationalist views of Christianity. Because of Scofield's exhaustive notes, those who used the Bible sometimes could not remember if what they read was from the Bible itself or from Scofield's notes.
