11 Οκτ 2022 · The design of the P41 was more lethal and powerful than previous fighter aircraft used by the United States Air Force. Engineers added two extra feet onto its frame, which made it look sleeker and longer in contrast to its portly predecessors.
Curtiss-Wright, perhaps best known as the manufacturer of the legendary P-40 Warhawk fighter plane, was the largest aviation company and the second largest company in the world (behind only General Motors) during World War II.
The fighter is believed to be a P-40E piloted by John Blackburn when it crashed into the lake on a gunnery training flight on 28 April 1942, killing the pilot. His body was recovered from the aircraft, which was submerged in 20 feet of water.

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter-bomber that first flew in 1938. The P-40 design was a modification of the previous Curtiss P-36 Hawk which reduced development time and enabled a rapid entry into production and operational service.
The Seversky XP-41 was a fighter aircraft built in the United States in 1939. A single prototype was modified from the last production Seversky P-35 by adding a new streamlined canopy, a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 -19 engine with a two-speed supercharger, and revised landing gear. [1] The XP-41 first flew in March 1939.
19 Μαΐ 2019 · On 20 December 1942 a flight of four P-40Fs from the 44th Fighter Group of the American 13th Air Force left Bauer Field, Efate in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) on a navigation and training exercise around the islands in the group.
