P-51D Performance. INTRODUCTION. These calculations were prepared in connection with a comparison of the P-51D and P-51H airplane. Considerable effort was expended to achieve agreement between flight test and calculated results, and the data presented represent good agreement with most of the flight test results.
The 1,450 hp. Packard/Merlin engine (1,595 hp. war emergency rating) gave the P-51B-7 a top speed of 445 m.p.h. Best climb was 3,320 ft/min at 10,000 ft. The new Mustang carried 4-.50 caliber MG(two per wing), and up to 1,000 lb.. of external stores.
It had a maximum speed of about 390 miles (630 km) per hour and a combat range of roughly 750 miles (1,200 km). The use of external drop tanks nearly doubled its operational range to 1,375 miles (2,200 km).
