Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a school guidance program that assists students with academic, career, personal, and social development. Advocate for high academic achievement and social development of all students. Provide school-wide prevention and intervention services.
School counselors and members of the support team help students set short- and long-term goals, improve attendance, reduce and resolve conflicts, and prevent youth suicide.

School counselors work with state school counseling associations, school counseling preparation program and legislative bodies to advocate for alignment of credentialing or licensing requirements (Carey, et al., 2019) with the ASCA Professional Standards & Competencies for School Counselors.
