Public guided tours of the 200-inch (5.1-meter) Hale Telescope are available to visitors on the weekends (Saturday and Sunday) spring through fall—typically from the first Saturday in April to the last Sunday in October.
The famous 200-inch Hale Telescope is open to the public for tours every Saturday and Sunday. The tour takes you inside the Observatory building and onto the observing floor under the 200-inch telescope. To earn extra credit you must take the guided tour inside of the telescope dome.
Palomar Observatory near San Diego, California, is a center of astronomical research owned and operated by Caltech. The Observatory is home to three active research telescopes: the 200-inch (5.1-meter) Hale Telescope, the 48-inch (1.2-meter) Samuel Oschin Telescope, and the 60-inch (1.5-meter) telescope.

The public areas of the Observatory consist of the A.W. Greenway Jr. Visitor Center and the Visitors Gallery inside the 200-inch Hale Telescope (P200) dome. The Visitor Center also features the Palomar Observatory Gift Shop, which is open on weekends and most weekdays.
Visitors can take self-guided tours of the 200-inch telescope daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The observatory is open 7 days a week, year round, except for December 24 and 25 and during times of inclement weather.
