Sublimis Deus (English: The sublime God; [1] erroneously cited as Sublimus Dei) is a Papal bull promulgated by Pope Paul III on June 2, 1537, which forbids the enslavement of the indigenous peoples of the Americas (called "Indians of the West and the South") and all other indigenous people who could be discovered later or previously known. [2]

Scope and Contents The register contains copies of papal bulls and other documents concerning the Chapel, dated from 1501 to 1537. The text is all in Lambert`s hand, except for folios 41-42, and there are large calligraphic initials.
Recently, authors such as Gustavo Gutierrez have noted this fact: 'The bull of Pope Paul III, <Sublimis Deus> (June 2, 1537), is regarded as the most important papal pronouncement on the human condition of the Indians."
