18 Φεβ 2024 · Paper ballot punchouts, also known as Votomatic cards or simply punch cards, were once a staple in the U.S. electoral system. Devised to streamline vote counting, each card would represent a voter’s choices, with small perforated areas, or “chads,” being punched out to indicate selections for candidates or policy measures.
Paper ballots were pieces of paper marked and supplied by voters. Before the introduction of the secret ballot , American political parties distributed ballots listing their own candidates for party supporters to deposit in ballot boxes.
Optical scan paper ballot systems: Voters mark their votes by filling in an oval, box, or similar shape on a paper ballot. The paper ballots are scanned either at the polling place or at a central location.

Punch card systems are based on a physical document ballot and computerized vote tabulation. In one system, the voter uses a stylus to punch holes in the card at the appropriate positions to indicate his or her vote; this system can be used for absentee voting as well.
