Mandibular prognathism has been described as one of the most severe maxillofacial deformities. The etiology involves systemic disease, genetic influence or neuromuscular imbalance. Treatment modalities include growth modification, comprehensive orthodontic treatment and combined orthodontic-orthognathic surgery.
We speak of mandibular prognathism (maxillary prognathism) when the lower teeth are in front of the upper teeth and do not fit. It has three main causes: We often find a combination of both: undergrowth of the upper jaw and overgrowth of the lower jaw.
Various postoperative complications of orthognathic surgery have been reported, which have led to serious problems in a number of cases. A majority of these complications can be managed through proper treatment and with a sufficient understanding of their causes.
Our case report recapitulates the clinical and histopathological findings in pituitary GH adenomas and associated acromegaly and emphasises their importance in surgical orthodontic planning. A 22-year-old man was referred to our hospital for orthognathic surgery after 12 months of presurgical orthodontic treatment (fig. 1).
