17 Οκτ 2024 · Peace of Westphalia, European settlements of 1648, which brought to an end the Eighty Years’ War between Spain and the Dutch and the German phase of the Thirty Years’ War. The peace was negotiated, from 1644, in the Westphalian towns of Münster and Osnabrück .
Signed in 1648, the Peace of Westphalia was an attempt to end decades of religious and political conflict through a negotiated settlement. Though fighting continued amidst the negotiations, delegates from across Europe persisted, recognizing that compromise was necessary to avert further devastation.

The participants used it as a specific historical experience but also as an analytical tool to understand and shed a new light on the roots of current conflicts and political rivalries.

The symposium “Winning the peace from 1648 to today” was organized in the anniversary year “375 Years of the Peace of Westphalia” by the LWL Institute for Westphalian Regional History, the Cluster of Excellence, and the City of Münster.
