The Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), also known as the boto, bufeo or pink river dolphin, is a species of toothed whale endemic to South America and is classified in the family Iniidae.
The Amazon river dolphin, also known as the pink river dolphin or boto, lives only in freshwater. It is found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela.
Among the five species of river dolphins, the pink dolphins are considered the most intelligent, with the brain capacity being 40% bigger than that of humans. The pink dolphins are known to prey upon the piranhas, the legendary terror of the Amazon.
In 1962, the Miami Seaquarium, led by Captain Gray, went on an expedition to Beaufort, South Carolina to capture what was considered to be the only known albino dolphin in the world. The mission was very low profile, as public outcry against the capture was evident.
