Candidates in North Carolina may take and pass the General Curriculum Mathematics subtest to qualify for a North Carolina license. Note that General Curriculum is a nationally available test that also includes a Multi-Subject subtest, which is not required for certification in North Carolina.
To apply for the initial Residency License to teach Elementary Education (K-6), candidates will take the following exams: Pearson Test 090 – Foundations of Reading; Pearson Test 103 – Multi-subjects Subtest; Pearson Test 203 – Mathematics Subtest; Pearson General Curriculum Multi-subjects & Math subtests taken in one test session #701
The Pearson General Curriculum Mathematics subtest assesses the mathematics content knowledge that teachers know. It is a timed test. The alignment of test items indicates that it includes mathematics concepts largely covered in 7th grade, 8th grade, and Math I.
The test fields range from tests of essential academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, and technology literacy to tests of a candidate’s knowledge of pedagogy and specific content areas.
